- (continued from previous page)slated house and has to be kept very clean. Some people tie them with a chain around the neck which is fastened to a stick or to the wall. Others have wooden bales with sticks standing up straight into which the cow puts her head. It is then fastened with an iron hasp. People used to call calves sucks and when they are calling them they say "Suck, Suck, Suck." The house in which the calves are put is usually warm and has a cement floor. The calves have no bales, they only have the whole house to lie and walk around.
