- About forty years ago all people used make there own candles. They were made of rushes. A member of the house-hold would gather a heap of green rushes and place them beside a fire and leave them there until they were perfectly dry, and when they are dry place them in a pan of melted grease Goose grease was generally used.
The rushes are left frying for about half an hour and kept stirred about in the hot grease. Then they are taken out of the pan and the green covering is peeled off them and the white part of the rush is placed down into a certain shape like a bottle and the grease is then poured in on them and when it is nearly firm the rushes are taken out and stored away. They were only lit on special occasions- Bailitheoir
