- (continued from previous page)and came into the kitchen the fire was not lit and woman of the house was gone out to milk her cows. I will make myself useful he thought to himself and commenced to kindle the fire. He knelt down on the hearth to rake up the cinders. When the woman of the house saw the smoke issuing from the chimney she ran in. "How dare you kindle the fire" she cried to the old man and gave him a blow on the back. The old man jumped to his feet and asked her what did she mean. Do you not know this is the 1st of May and we never kindle the fire till after 12 o'clock because if we do our neighbour can take our luck. All he has to say when he sees the smoke is "Hobby from the high smoke, Hobby from the high smoke" and then he would have the profit of our cow's milk. "Nonsense" cried the old man, " It is all pisrogue, it's pisrogue." With that she told him to be gone and never to enter her house again.
