- Earl Fitzwilliam was the local landlolrd and his family had been in the district since the Cromwellian Settlement. He was looked upon as a good landlord and no evictions or plantings have been carried out in the district. The landlord first came into possession of the land at the Cromwellian Settlement and the land was divided into farms under his guidance. The farms were not sub-divided among members of families on marrige marriage.
The landlord excerised special over his tenants but the were not punished for trival acts. Tithes were collected in the district in former times by the agent for the upkeep of the Protestant Clergy. They were collected in money and in kind. People resented their collection but there were no battles on account of them.- Faisnéiseoir
