- 1 Long ago in Ireland the people used to believe if a child had the
'' Whooping Cough '' the cure was to go to the river and catch a trout, and get some water in a vessel where you caught the trout. Then you have to bring the trout with you alive. Then you put three drops down the child's throat in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Then bring the fish back alive to the river.2 The people used to believe too, that if a white thorn tree grew in the middle of a field that it belonged to
the fairies, and if they did any harm to it or cut it down that the fairies would shoot at a cow with an
elf-stone which was a piece of fine flint which they got in the field. The cow would go round and would be very sick. No doctor or cow vet would cure her.The only cure is to go to a bog-hole with a can and get some water in it, just when you have the water in the can you must shut your mouth and not speak even if you meet you neighbour you must not speak to him.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
