The landlord, O'Connor, held an inenviable name as a landlord. The tenants had to be at his beck and call all the time. Rents were high and he showed no sympathy. It is said that he often compelled his tenants to travel the twenty miles from here to Baltrasna when he had work to be done. They dare not refuse.
It is thought that these Breffni landlords came into being the plantation of Ulster.
O'Connor had a local agent _ no less hated than himself. This agent's name was Soden, the same family that Monsignor Soden of Manorhamilton belonged to. It is said that the old women around here "burned sheaves" for the Sodens. This was a kind of curse well known here. A sheaf of oats was buried by some one for you if they wanted to bring you bad luck. The women prayed that the name of a Soden would not be known yet in the district. It looks like coming true now for with Mons. Soden the last of them will disappear. All the other members of the family died childless.
