Ar an leathanach seo
- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)30 or 40 years ago the housewife had to prepare her lights beforehand. Green rushes were collected, not from a bog as they were too soft, but from upland. They were then peeled leaving a little ridge up one side of each unstripped. Usually a good number were prepared at once. Then the maker took the rush in her right hand and pushed it through the melted fat towards the other end of the "grisset" when it was drawn completely through and lifted by the left hand. The rush absorbed the grease.
A little trough was used for storing these candles till they were required.
The holder was so made that by moving no. 3 spring no.1 and 2 opened to allow the candle to be inserted. By moving no.3 in the opposite direction the candle was gripped tight enough between 1 and 2.A second holder for a resin (rosin) candle was attached they used to spit awfully.- Bailitheoir
