- Some years ago the people of this district used to make all their own lime.
First of all they used to get limestones and break them up, like gravel for a road, with a stone hammer. They used to burn it in a kiln then.
The kiln was square and narrow at the bottom and as it went up it became wider. It used be generally in the side of a hill and there used be an eye in the middle of it. It used be filled with stones in one row and turf in the next and so on until the kiln would be full.
The people used to continue burning lime until a good deal of it was burned. Then it used be drawn home in horses and carts. The carts used be put in near the eye of the kiln. They used take that in the bottom first so that on top would fall down to them.
