One day, when he was boiling for the cattle, he lifted up a hot turnip and put it under his hat to bring home to feed his children. There was another man named Barney Hughes, and he kept telling Barney, his hat was on fire.
- Long ago there was a famine in Ireland, it was in the years 1846 and '47. The potatoes and the oats failed that year. The oats failed far worse than the potatoes. The people had to pull the oats that year because every rib of oats was as strong as a sally rod and they had to pull it with their hands. At dinner time they used to sit down alongside a black stook of oats or wheat and pick the black grains out of the sheaves for their dinner.
