- The Famine Times
The old people have short stories about the famine of 1846-47. It effected this district. The potatoes decayed in the ground. There were more people in the district that time than at present. Seven old foundations can be traced. The people travelled to Arva in west Cavan about 30 miles for seed potatoes for the following year. The blight did not effect the potatoes on the mountains of Arva. The Government gave the very poor people free meal in the town of Kingscourt. The oats was so short that it had to be pulled
