- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)they hatch is about fifteen. The best time for hatching eggs is in April or May. In olden times cows were tied with what was called a sougin or band of flax tied around their leg. There is always a piece of palm hung in the byre to bring luck. In olden times on a May Eve the fairies would come and take the butter from teh cows. The people used to tie a red string on the cows horn. The old people say it is lucky to milk before dark or before the fairies would come out, afraid while you would be coming in the fairies would take the cream of the milk.
