  1. There was a hedge-school in Campstown near Cootehill long ago. A hedge-school was a school where the pupils were taught in the open air in the Summer-time. The Rev. Walter Rountree went to the hedge-school at Campstown. The name of the teacher at this school was John Cahill.
The teachers in these schools used to go home with some of the pupils every evening. They stayed in each house for a week. The teachers of those schools were very poor. And in the houses where the pupils lived, the teachers got their food. And the parents of the pupils who were well off gave the teachers a couple of shillings. There was a terrible lot of spelling down in the old schools. Pins were given to the best spellers.
