- Hedge school were not very common in this country. There was one near my home in Greaughivna, Stradone, Co Cavam. It belonged to Mr Patrick Dunleavy and after his death it was sold to Mr Patrick Sexton who now uses it as a calfshed.
The teacher in this hedge school was Miss Margaret Sweeney. There were two rooms in it one was the school the other was the teachers dwelling house. In that time teachers were (not) not paid but the scholars supplied them with fuel and potatoes and any one who had not enough fuel or potatoes used to send a penny which was a big amount in those days. There were pencils or jotters in those days but there were slates and styles. When the scholars used to be reading their english books(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
