Twas on a sultry summer's day...

    (continued from previous page)
You went and took the shillin free, in Martin Hogan's bar
And as to those you leave behind
You may as well make up your mind
You went and put your foot in it
    To-day in Mullingar.
Twas then I wept with rage and pain
But all my protests were in vain
We marched through Monastereven, with the General on a cart
And when we came to Wexford town
Straight to the transport we went down
    And sailed away to India
    My sorrow! Mullingar
    The heat was dreadful overhead
We fought till all were nearly dead
    From Sutledge to the Kyber
    Till we came to Kandahar
Those Afghans were a savage lot
They whacked it to us hard and hot
I lost my leg by cannon shot
    And mourned for Mullingar.
