  1. When a person dies in this district it is customary that the neighbouring women gather in during the day to sympathise with his people, while at night the men flock in, and when they have offered up a few prayers for the repose of the soul of the dead person, they sympathise with his relatives. Then a male relation of the dead person offers them drink, which is generally porter to the young men and whiskey to the old men.
    Long ago, as well as being offered drink, which was said to be in honour of the dead person, clay pipes and cheap
    tobacco, which soon got the name of "Wake Tobacco" were distributed and accepted with hearty thanks.
    The wakes of today are not as lively as those (of) some fifty years ago, as nowadays singing, which was customary at wakes, is considered disrespectful to the dead person and therefore the custom of singing at wakes has died out.
