    The old gave a jerk suddenly and gave a look out the window, I suppose he suddenly thought that he forgot to feel anything against the window an' what did he see outside but the two "hayroes" staring in at him with their mouths open. The two lads slipped off to bed immediately and pretended to be asleep. The old man put up his gold in a new hiding place and then went to the boys room and tried to waken them; they did it too well for the old miser could not knock hum or hey out of them. Then he put the lighted dip to their eyebrows and burned their eyebrows but still they did not waken. The old man knew he was done and that two others knew of his secret, even that those two were his own flesh and blood did not satisfy him. Sometimes after this trouble came on the country and bands of soldiers were looking everywhere for people who had money and taking it from them. The old man heard this and he thought no one had money but himself and that his two sons were after informing on him. So he called them one night at midnight and made them carry two bags with all his gold to a muddy gap where he had a big hole dug. He ordered them to settle
