About 70 years ago there was a school at Gibbs in Kilurney. This was in a building which is now an old barn. I am told the teacher's name was Mr. [?] Murray. He slept in the school and he went to the neighbouring farmers houses for his meals.
There was only one desk with stools around the walls. These were made for the school by the people of the locality. The pens they used were goose quills, and they had to supply their own books. There are but a few of the pupils of the school alive to-day. This school only lasted about nine years; Mr Gibbs wanted the building for a house and the pupils had to go Newtown Anner School, about four miles away.
The scholars paid the master one shilling a quarter. About thirty scholars attended the school.
