- Long ago people used to thrash all their oats with a flail. The flail that I saw was two sticks tied together with a flax cord. The two sticks are not the one size The big one is called the handstaff and the small one is called the souple. There is a bit of a stick run down both sticks and this is called a "cappin". (The "cappin" was made of a sally root and this was put into a pot of potatoes when they were boiling and they could bend it any way.) Then they would get a flax cord and tie the hand staff and the souple together. This cord is called a 'middlen'.
