- The making of candles long ago was a trade which only the old people knew. First they used to make a large fire and get a stone with a hole in the centre of it, they used to heat this stone near the fire and then get the tallow off either a sheep or goat. They used to melt the tallow in the stone, then they used to get an instrument for shaping the candle and this was called a mould. There used to be a cotton thread placed in the centre of the mould and the dripping poured into it, at each side of the thread. They used to leave it cooling for a while. Then it used to come out in the shape of a candle. These candles were called mould candles but their colour was a dirty yellow. They used also used the chips of bog-deal(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
