of a spade and more often with a plough.
Aran Victors, Champions, Kerr's pinks, Queens, Aran Banners, Epicures and Leagures are the best known varieties.
Kerr's pinks grow best in this district, although Leagures are generally a good crop except when the frost burns the stalks early in Summer.
Aran banners grow to a very large size except when the frost burns the stalks and they grow best in boggy land.
The local spades are bought in shops, although long ago blacksmiths made them and sold them after Mass each Sunday in Spring.
The potatoes are raised in Autumn by first taking the sides of the drills and then ploughing straight through the centre of the drill. The neighbour then gather and help whoever is digging the potatoes, this gathering is called a "meicheal". That man helps each of the "meicheal" in turn, as they are digging their own potatoes, and thus pays off the debt for their day's work.
