    On 1541 the Abbey was formally dissolved by Henry VIII, and granted in 1543 to O'Brien, Baran of Ibrackane, who protected the monks. After Elizabeths confirmation of the grant the friars remained still in possession.
    In 1617 Fr. D Mooney visited Quin and found two of three helpless old friars about the place. They remembered the monastery being suppressed, and that its gold and silver had been sent to MacNamara of Knoppogue.
    Mr T.J. Westropp says that the community taking advantage of the freedom of religious worship granted by the Catholic Confederation of 1641 repaired and reopened the College connected with the monastery, and that in a short time no fewer than 800 youths were receiving instruction from the Franciscan fraternity of Quin.
    One of their scholars was a historian Anthony Broder together with eighteen members of his family. It was finally destroyed by Cromwells
