- When St Patrick first came into Mayo he came from the direction of Ross Abbey. He crossed the Black River west of Shrule where a new bridge is built now. There was a ford in the river and he crossed it easily. Then he came down the Dalgan road and in at Poll an Chapaill down through the bog towards Cill Choir and away towards Croagh Patrick. There he stayed for forty days and forty nights. He ate nor drank nothing but kept praying. During that time devils came in the form of Crows. They tormented him every day but at long last he got vexed and threw his bell at them. The bell hit the side of the mountain and rolled down into the sea. Every seven years the bell is heard ringing in the sea.
