- There was once a priest and he had a servant boy. The boy was getting a lot of food. One day the priest told the servant girl not to give him much to eat. Jack was the boys name. Every time Jack used to grumble the priest used to say "the nearer the bone the sweeter the meat." One day after they came home from a long journey the priest told Jack to let out the horse in a green field. Jack let out the horse but he tied him to a big stone. He said to Jack "why have you the horse tied to the stone." Jack said, "the nearer the stone the sweeter the grass and the nearer the bone the sweeter the meat." From that on he got plenty to eat.
