- In the year 1845 the year before the famine the potatoes were very plentiful. The price per stone was twopence. The farmers refused to sell them to the poorer classes at that price and rather than do so they dug holes in the fields and put the potatoes into them and covered tham with clay to let them rot. Some of the priests when they saw this remarked that they would not have any trouble digging them the next year.
