- In the townsland of Barnakil there is an old castle, which has braved the storms of fourteen hundred years. All that is intact of this old castle is one side and a portion of a gable end.
The demensions of this castle would be about sixty feet long, by twenty five feet wide, by thirty feet high, and supposed to have a flagged roof.
There lived in this castle at one time one of the O'Brien's of the Silken Bridles, he lived there for a good many years, until he was subdued by a stonger force.
After him there lived another chieftain called O'Whelan from whom the townsland of Knockeylan derives its name. O'Whelan did not reign very long in this castle, for it was stormed by Oliver Cromwell, in the year 1649. We have from tradition that Cromwell levelled his guns on the top of Grawn hill, and swept away three quarters of the building, and put to flight the occupants of the castle.- Bailitheoir
