  1. Famine
The potatoes rotted in the soil. In this part Indian meal was used. Government relief was given to some people. Most of the people died by the roadside, but were never buried. This caused disease. At that time Cloonfaughna was very thickly populated, but during the famine they died one by one. The funerals were so plentiful that the coffins could not be secured for half the people, but instead they were wrapped in blankets.
