Henry Curry took a leading and very active part in the Fenian Movement and as such would be oath bound In early life, he was a school master of merit, in the present Belcarra School, not many years after its erection. Like all Fenian leaders he was sought after by the government and soon arrested and thrown into prison, by the authorities, who he remained for some time.
A professor in St Jarlath's College Tuam named Connor Power, and afterwards a Member of Parliament for Mayo, secured his place, a local man, Michael Chalke, a native of Carrajames. On his release the manager refused to reinstate him owing to his being bound by secret oath to his comrades in the Fenians. He then opened a school in a thatched house, his own home, on the road leading to(continues on next page)
