- May Day Customs:
1. In the country the old people used to put ashes or a coal under the churn in order to help to gather the butter.
2. If you washed your face on the dew on May Day before the sun rose you would not get sunburnt all the year.
3. Some people say that you should not give milk away on May Day. It is said whoever you would give the milk to would bring your butter until that day twelvemonth.
4. It is said that the cattle snuff the grass on May Morning because the grass is “infested with spirits” and they snuff it three times to banish them away.
New Year’s Day Customs:
1. The old people say you should not throw out water or sweep out dirt on New Year’s Day because it is said that you would throw away your luck.
2. It is an old custom at some people on New Year’s Day and that is not to go in to another house until a fellow with dark hair would go in first.
Other Customs:
1. If a visitor called to a house when a meal was being taken he was supposed to say “God bless the work” or “Sit ye merry”. To this came the answer from the head of(continues on next page)- Collector
