    The French landed in Killala in 1798. A protestant man named Wallace living convenient to the Acres where his grand-daughter lives at present saved the lives of many of those who took part in the '98 Rising. Lord Cornwallis passed the way and having asked if any rebels were in his house Wallace said that there were not, although there were about twenty men in hiding there. The people were grateful to him for many years afterwards.
