    They are sprayed with "Bluestone"
and Washing soda mixed with wat
er; this mixture is mixed in the
barrel of the sprayer and sprink
led on the leaves of the potatoes.
    Spraying also saves them from
getting bad, before the new potatoes
    are ripe.
    The Digging of the Potatoes
In the month of October the digging
of the potatoes begins, and it is
the most important work of Autumn.
Long ago they used to dig
    the potatoes out, but nowadays
    the farmers plough them out
because it would take too long to
dig a few acres of potatoes.
Long ago they brought them in,
    in baskets, which they called
    eiseáin.
There were big baskets, with a
    handle on each side.
