- (continued from previous page)Here Kane remained hidden for three months until a Sailing vessel named "The Dunbrody" was due to Sail to America from New Ross. The vessel was boarded and searched at Passage East and Dunmore East but Kane evaded capture by travelling across country and boarding the ship in Ballymacaw bay.To aid him in his escape Mrs. Flynn gave him her hooded cloak to wear, and thus disguised as a woman, he rode behind Mr. Patk. Heffernan's father (Mr. Wm. Heffernan) on a black Stallion at dead of night from Faithlegg to Ballymacaw. Both men were armed with horse-pistols. On reaching the bay they put off in a small boat and went aboard "The Dunbrody" which lay off Shore.Kane reached America Safely and afterwards sent home two ballads commemorating the fight at Carrickshock and his escape. The ballads were written on the voyage to America. The first named "Billy Kanes Farewell" is as follows:--"Farewell unto each jovial lad
Who Stood and fought ar CarrickShock
Where Gibbons and his forces
Lay [s]weltering in black gore.
