Now on an island in Gartan Lake Godfrey O Donnell spent a year in retirement dying from wounds he received at the battle of Credran Hill near Sligo. He died and was buried at Convall graveyard near Letterkenny. The stones of Godfrey's mansion were used to build the present Lough Veagh house. It was said that as a result of using these stones there could never be an heir in Lough Veagh house. No heir has been born in that house since.
The name of the island on which Godfrey O Donnell had his mansion is Forrest Island and it is near St Columb's hotel.
