On this particular morning he left his seat at Manorvaughan to go to Dublin, it is said to take an action against the British Government to receive possession of the Phoenix Park which he claimed, and before he left home he gave orders that the evictions should proceed with out delay.
But he got no farther than Cratlagh about three miles from his mansion.
His secretary and Cardriver perished with him on that eventful morning the 2nd April 1898.
His remains were brought to Dublin and interred in a vault in St. Mitich'an's cemetery in Church St.
He was so much hated in Dublin that on the day of his funeral a great crowd gathered to prevent his remains from being brought into the city, and with great difficulty the police prevented the crowds from throwing the coffin into the Liffey.
