- A few years ago John Sweeney a native of Cortoon died. This man made his living in making riddles and sieves. He was very poor first but he increase in riches as years went by. He got so rich that there were many songs composed about him. The way he made the riddles and seves was to gather a few bundles of sally rods and stick them up the chimney to dry. When they were dry they were so tough that you could bend them up and down and down and up without breaking. He put the strong rods in the bottom and the weak ones between the strong ones. He made eighteen a day and sometimes more. Then he send Mick to Milltown and Pat to Dunmore to sell the riddles and they got four and five shillings each for(continues on next page)
