    There was a rich farmer's daughter,
    Lived near the town of Ross
    She courted a Highland soldier
    His name was Johnny Hart.

    For six long months they courted,
    Her parents they knew not,
    He was her darling soldier
    Dressed up in his Highland plaid.

    Said the mother to the daughter
    "I'll do distracted mad,
    If you marry a private soldier,
    Dressed up in his Highland plaid

    It was early the next morning,
    Her mother went to Ross,
    And to the Colonel's quarter,
    She was sent across.
