- Once upon a time there lived a man in Cleggan whose name was St Cannack. He led a holy life, he used to go out in the fields at night praying. He only ate one meal a day. One day he was praying out in a field and a man named Tom Mullan cut his head off with a spade. He at once took up his head in his hands and went to a blessed well and washed it. When he had it washed he put it on again and laid down and died. Since then the well is called St Cannack's well.
