   The cow-shed is called a byre. The byre is 18 ft. long, 14 ft wide and 7 ft. high. On two paved stands, about 5 ins. high, the cows stand. A hollow about 2 ft. wide runs between the two stands. This hollow is called a channel. Two thick beams run across the byre, one at each end. Six wooden stakes are sunk in the ground about 3 ft. apart. They are tied to the beam overhead with a strong hemp rope. There are six chains one on each stake. The cattle are tied round the neck with a chain. Through the back door the manure is thrown out. The channel is cleaned every day and bedded. A horse shoe is hung over the door.
