  1. Locks were not used then but big blocks of wood instead, - these were fastened by means of holes at each side of the door. The hole at one end was so long, that the block of wood was pushed back in it during the day for safety.
    Small wooden bolts were used during the day. The big blocks were used to keep out robbers.
