  1. A Song (continued)

Now as the hawthorn is in blossom,

    (continued from previous page)
    Lemass and MacEntee.
Thanks to the men they've sent amongst us,
Great praise to them is due.
A peat industry they have put in motion
On the plain of Saint Lua,
Each morning as I enter Cualac
I'll go down by the rippling rill
I can hear the mellow blackbird fluting
And the song thrush loud and shrill,
As I proceed along the roadway,
    And down by the grove,
I can hear the little warblers
And the cooing of the dove,
    There dame Nature lives again,
Her face is young and fair,
And as for health there is a wealth,
In Cualac's pure and balmy air.
    Then for scenic beauty,
Just travel the hill around and at the foot,
Is the lough - a picture no nicer can be found.
From there can be seen the holy places,
Where our saints prayed and blessed,
And all the Connacht hills and mountains,
    Like sentinels guarding the West,
    And in among the heather,
Young sportsmen free from toil and care
