- Long ago the people of this parish lived in different houses from the houses we have at present. They were low houses with thatched roofs. The walls were made of stone and earth. They mixed the earth with water until it was soft and then they put it on the stones.In some of the houses there were no chimneys but they had holes in the roof to let the smoke out. The fuel they burned was furze, bushes, roots, "brosna" and "scalps". There were big fireplaces in some of the houses. The houses were lime washed inside and around the door and windows on the outside. There was a "settle" in every house. It was used as a "settle" during the day and as a bed during the night. There was a plank on the side and when it was lifted up the "settle" was like a box.The light the people had long ago was a candle which they(continues on next page)
