The best known Hedge Schoolmaster of his day was a man named O'Callaghan of Charlesfield Lyre Banteer. His grandson Timothy O'Callaghan lives still in Knockeen, Kilmacrane, Banteer.
The Schoolmaster was married to a woman named Twohig, a cousin to the Late Canon Peter O'Leary. Their son Thade was a good scholar in both English and Irish.
Thade's father taught him English and his mother who knew no English conversed in Irish with him. The result was that the child knew both Irish and English correctly.
