  1. My father sows about an acre of potatoes every year. My uncle prepares the ground. We don't put any manure on the ground before we plough it. When new ground is broken the potatoes are set in ridges. But in old ground they are set in drills. This is the way the ground is prepared. It is ploughed in one direction. Then after a while it is ploughed in the opposite direction again. Then it is harrowed. The drills are opened then. After that the manure has to be put out and spread. Then the potatoes have to be laid about a foot each from one another. Then they are covered. They are left that way for a while. then they are softened again with a fork. then the drills are pointed up again. They are left that way until the stalks come up a good bit. Then they are sprayed. Sometimes they are sprayed twice. They are left this way until they are dug. they are put out to dry before been sown. Lime is shaken on the potatoes to dry quickly.
