  1. Long ago houses were roofed with straw and sods. There was a bed in the kitchen long ago. It was called the "hag". The bed was near the fire. The young children always slept in that bed. The fire was in the middle of the floor. There was a hole in the roof for the smoke to got out. There was a wicker chimney in every house when the Landlord was not in the district. He would not allow anyone to have a wicker chimney. Long ago houses were made of white 'dabh' and bog scraws. Houses were very wide long ago and the fire was on the middle of the floor. There was one door in every house. They had a thick stick left behind the door to keep the door closed. The stick the the people had for closing the, they sat on it during the day.
    Long ago doors were made of rods and they were lined with a mat inside. There was one window in every house. Long ago windows were packed with a bundle of straw. The material that was used for the floor was white 'dabh'. There was a half door in every house long ago. The fuel that was used for the fires long ago was timber, sods and turf. The people always kept a good fire down at night-time and there was good light from the fire.
