  1. Cures
    In ancient times when the people had but little learning there were no doctors in the country and the old people had certain remedies which were supposed to cure certain diseases. Some of those remedies are still in use by some people.
    When children had the whooping cough the woman of the house would get oaten meal from three women named Mary and make porridge from it. If a member of the family met a man with a white horse and asked him for a cure for the person who would have the cough then whatever remedy he gave would cure that person.
    If a person had the measles the cure was to drink whey and goat's milk. A cure for a person who had Scarletina fever was to fill the house with sheep, and the breath of the sheep would kill the germs and disinfect the house so that no one else would get it.
    If one had a wart, to rub a black snail on it or dip it in the water which which would be held in the trunk of an old tree would cure it. If one was
