- (continued from previous page)say "when I go by the rule, I go by the rule of contradictions, when I say hold fast let go and when I say let go hold fast. The person holding the other end if the cord should then let it go for he said hold fast, but he would forget himself and hold it. Then he would reverse the rhyme and say "when I say let it go hold fast and when I say hold fast let it go". Then the other fellow would probably let it go and then there would be a laugh. In some places the fellow saying the words would have a wet rag in one hand and when the other fellow made a mistake he would get a welt of it in the face.
