    a married brother + has never done anything except agricultural labour on the brothers farm. Most of his life has been spent sitting quitely in the corner listening to what was being said but seldom or ever venturing a remark in the conversation. Nevertheless he was completely happy and chuckled away to himself at the daily jokes related round the fire. His nephews & nieces regarded him as poor simple Tom & were highly amused on the first occasion that I tried to probe Toms memory for '98 traditions very labouriously in halting sentences he told me sufficient to encourage
