  1. Old Song

I'm a gay "dacent" labouring youth...

I'm a gay "dacent" labouring youth
I was reared near the town of Dunshaughlin
I was a "widon" in the first of me youth
Since I buried poor Sally McLoughlin
I got married but once in my life
The same sin I'll never commit again
I discovered when she was me wife
She was fond of wan Barney McFinnegan
Her father built castles in wood
Oftentimes I went to admire them
They built in the time of the Flood
To keep her ould ancestors drier, sir.
When he found I had Molly bespoke
He was getting quite fat, but got thin again
In the struggle his gissard I broke
And we had a stiff corpse over Finnegan.
The corpse in promotion was put
Amongst all the friends in the barn, sir,
And some they came there upon foot
And more they came upon "garns" sir.
