  2. The ox & the ass
    Long ago all the animals were able to talk. This farmer had an ox and an ass, an 'twas with the ox he used to do all his ploughing. This night anyway the ox & the ass were in the stable, and the ox had terrible grunting & groaning.
    "What bedamned is wrong with you?" says the ass. "Oh, I'm all sore from kicking and beating me all day" says the ox. "Isn't it fine for yous that you haven't to be out ploughing like me"
    "I'll tell you what you'll do," says the ass. "Pretend you're sick tomorrow & don't ate anything in the morning.
    "begab'n [?] man I'll try it," says the ox.
    Who was standing outside the door but the master and he overheard the whole conversation. In the morning anyway the ox was sick and he refused to take his feed. The servant went in and told the master that the ox was sick and wouldn't eat
