    giant was missing the first night, two giants missing on the second night and the three giants were missing in the third night.
    In this place where the boy, Jack, was now, a dragon used to come every seven years in from the sea and he had to get the most beautiful maiden in the land to devour. If he did not he would "destroy before him". The people always agreed to the dragon's demand and gave him the most beautiful maiden. The lot fell this year on the King's own daughter and she was to be given to the dragon on the next day after Jack had killed the third giant. After supper the master said to Jack that he had minded his herds so well during the last three days that he deserved a holiday and that he need not go with the herds on the morrow but to come with him to the shore where the dragon
