    was to come out and devour the King's daughter. Jack said that he settled with him to herd his flocks and that he would do that and he would not accompany him to the shore. The master said "Oh! But you will have to come." "Why have I to come since I only settled with you to mind your flocks." "Well, if you look at it that way I will not object to your staying at home."
    Jack went out as usual with his herds next morning. The master as well as all the people of the land proceeded the shore to see what would take place. The King had made a proclaimation that if anyone could be found who was brave to fight and kill the dragon he could have his daughter in marriage and would succeed him as King. All gathered to the appointed spot to see if any such man would 'turn up.'
